Former minister Arben Malaj stated that Sali Berisha no longer represents a leading alternative for the Albanian opposition.
Malaj also spoke about the functioning of political parties and the importance of dissenting opinions within them.
"Political parties are institutions provided for in the Constitution. They have a legal obligation to allow free thought, dissenting opinion. If a party were to say in its Statute that 'we prohibit dissenting opinion, we prohibit competition', etc., I am convinced that even Kreshnik would not register it as a political entity, because registration is done based on the Constitution," he said.
He also emphasized that parties are financed mainly from the state budget, which according to him increases the responsibility for democratic functioning.
"Second, Albanian political parties, as voluntary associations, are financed up to 90% from the state budget ," said Malaj.
Regarding the opposition leadership, Malaj was critical of Berisha.
"Regarding Berisha. Berisha has long since lost the opportunity to be the leader of the Albanian opposition. In this regard, we would have another discussion today. Is a positive synergy being created in the opposition? The opposition is not a life-or-death opponent, but it is an alternative," declared the former minister.
Commenting on the race within the Democratic Party, he also focused on Mereme Sela's candidacy, which he said should have broader political support.
"Regarding the lady who has emerged as a candidate and is going to court. She is right, because everyone has the right to choose and be elected. But the weak point is that she has emerged simply as an individual. But when you become the leader of a political party, you create a group ," Malaj said.
According to Malaj, the lack of alternatives within the DP is related to the way it has been run over the years.
"But the fact that there are no candidates is not an advantage for Berisha, but is clear evidence of an authoritarian leader. So in this regard, something new is needed. So even when he will not hand over power himself, there are ways to take power away from him and help him by taking this absolute power away," he said.
In conclusion, he made a critical assessment of Berisha's figure in relation to the country's political history.
"Berisha was considered the leader who overthrew communism and is concluding as a leader who in his general traits has a communist mentality in how he controls his party or how he eats, or does not allow new alternatives to grow in the DP," Malaj said.
