Berisha: We will restore the maritime agreement with Greece!

According to Berisha, it was an agreement from which both parties benefited.

The leader of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha, during his meeting with immigrants in Athens, declared that he would restore the maritime agreement with Greece if he returns to power. A move that goes against the "idol" of the moment, Donald Trump, who seeks to 'annex' territories from neighbors and not to give them back.

According to Berisha, it was an agreement that benefited both sides, both Albania and Greece. Although there is a Constitutional Court decision on this pact that rejects it as unconstitutional and detrimental to national interests, the Prosecutor's Office even launched an investigation into the pact's negotiators.

Berisha further accused Rama of being the one who broke this agreement, which was rejected by the Constitutional Court in 2010.

" The DP, in this spirit, returned to power and signed with the authorities of this country, the maritime agreement. I tell you here, brothers and sisters, that is the best agreement that Albania has ever signed with its neighbors. Of course, it would be absurd to sign an agreement that Greece would lose and Albania would lose.

So there is an agreement when both parties win and if there was an agreement that both parties won, it was the agreement that we made for the economic zones and the sea. Edi Rama overturned this agreement. Not only did he overturn the agreement, but when the court rejected it, the Greek governments for the sake of truth and the center right and left respectively, agreed to go to The Hague, because in the Constitution international law prevails and to receive sanction from the Hague Court.

What did he do? No, he said. We will make a better deal. He turned out to be a charlatan, negotiated for three years and in the end he tells the Foreign Minister that we cannot sign it, that we have a decision of the Constitutional Court.

"I guarantee you that that agreement with the ruling DP will be finalized and relations between Greece and Albania will be very good ," Berisha said.

-Why was the agreement canceled?

The Republic of Albania and Greece signed on 27.04.2009, the Agreement 'On the Delimitation of Their Respective Areas', of the Continental Shelf and Other Maritime Areas that belong to them, based on international law.

The then opposition appealed this agreement to the Constitutional Court, claiming that the country lost 354.4 square kilometers of water surface from it.

The Constitutional Court, with Decision 15, dated 15.4.2010, annulled the agreement, declaring it unconstitutional and detrimental to national interests.

-The prosecution launched an investigation into the pact negotiators

The Maritime Pact with Greece was signed in 2009 by Dora Bakoyannis and Lulzim Basha, the two Foreign Ministers of those years in Albania and Greece.

Meanwhile, in 2014, when the Socialist Party came to power, the General Prosecutor's Office launched an investigation into the signatories of the maritime border agreement with Greece.

The investigations were closed 3 years later in 2017, with the Prosecutor's Office challenging the Constitutional Court's decision, saying it found no violation. The argument used in the decision to dismiss the case was the lack of elements of a criminal offense by the officials who drafted the agreement and those who signed it.
