Will Veliaj and Salianji be released tomorrow?
Justice lost another battle with politics today. The Special Court decided to release Jamarbër Malltez, accused of the "Partizani" affair, from "house arrest." His father-in-law, Sali Berisha, was previously released.
But it seems that other well-known figures who are currently in prison are also seeking freedom, such as former president Ilir Meta, the mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj, and former MP Ervin Salianji.
Ilir Meta today appealed to the Court of Appeal the decision of June 26, where he requested a change in the security measure. In that session, SPAK presented new evidence, which revealed that Kryemadhi had spent over 200 thousand dollars in the US and other countries on luxury purchases and had not declared them. But Meta claims that he was unaware of this and has filed an appeal to the Court of Appeal.
Meanwhile, tomorrow will be a very important day for Erion Veliaj and Ervin Salianji. As for Veliaj, tomorrow is the hearing at the High Court, the final level of the judiciary, where the mayor's fate will be sealed, whether he will be released or not. The hearing will be held at 12:00.
The judges will consider the arguments given by Veliaj's defense and then SPAK's arguments why the security measures should not be changed. In the end, the Supreme Court will have the final say on whether Veliaj will remain in prison or gain freedom. The rapporteur for the case will be Judge Albana Boksi.
The Mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj, was arrested on February 10, 2025 and is under investigation for corruption and money laundering.
As for Salianji, the latter has requested conditional release, having served 3/4 of his sentence. The last hearing was postponed to July 8, as a report from the probation service is expected tomorrow on whether the conditions for his release are met. The Fier Prison itself has given a positive report and it is likely that Salianji will be released tomorrow.
Salianji has been in solitary confinement in Fier prison since October of last year. The former MP was found guilty by a final decision of false reporting by the Court of Appeals for the 'Babale' file, being sentenced to 1 year in prison. /Pamphlet
