Marathon session continues, DP and SP clash over attacks on EU ambassador
Attacks on EU Ambassador Silvio Gonzato have sparked debates in Parliament.
As the session continues since this morning, the leader of the SP parliamentary group, Taulant Balla, announced that the SP has requested the exclusion of the leader of the DP, Sali Berisha, for 30 days. Meanwhile, earlier there were reactions from Prime Minister Rama and the Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos.
" Based on Article 10 (prohibition of sexual harassment), a deputy is prohibited from any behavior of a sexual nature that affects the dignity of anyone... Based on Article 65/1, disciplinary measures and exclusion from parliamentary committees and plenary sessions are required. Mr. Speaker of the Assembly, I inform you that we have addressed the Ethics Committee for the 30-day exclusion of Mr. Sali Berisha ," said Balla.
On the other hand, the leader of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha, responded to Balla, stating that it was all slander. He did not back down, but continued to insist that gender segregation is not foreseen in any EU directive.
" You answer a slanderer, it is not worth wasting time. I have not made any insults to any ambassador but I have expressed my opinions, as I will express them openly in any case. I have asked this Parliament and outside this Parliament, from Ambassador Gonzato, to tell us which directive, because the European Union functions with directives, which European Union directive uses the terminology of multiple gender affiliation. I use the terminology, I see it, I know it because the prominent experts that I know have confirmed to me that none of the European Union directives have this terminology, but they are all in binary. They talk about man and woman. That is all. Any kind of sui generis interpretation is the problem of the one who does it, but I again and again declare here that I am against any form of discrimination and inequality, but I am absolutely categorically against it. Attempts to reformat human anthropology, the gender binary, the Albanian constitution, the laws and codes of the country, which sanction this binary as foundation of Albania's constitutional order ," Berisha said.
But the debate then escalated. It was Gent Strazimiri who took the floor and launched the attacks, while the Minister for Parliamentary Relations, Toni Gogu, reacted to him, accusing Berisha of attacking Gonzato for his sexual orientation. Berisha then reacted again, continuing to insist on his arguments.
" The law is a European standard. This is what the commissioner says. It is a European policy, so it offers, honorable gentleman of January 21, so it approaches with 10 directives, not one, 10 directives, because it talks about equality between men and women, because it talks about equality between men and women. So this story of a personal attack on the ambassador for a European public policy, for a European standard, for an Albanian culture, which is the culture of non-discrimination for any reason in the world. I believe that it should be condemned by this Parliament and by these people who continue and stigmatize ambassadors for their personal qualities ", said Gogu.
What sparked the debate was a statement made earlier by Berisha, who seemed to target the ambassador over his sexual orientation, after Gonzato admitted to living with a man. Berisha accuses Gonzato of pushing for the adoption of the law on gender equality, which, according to the opposition, would allow for more than two genders.
" Sir, we respect everyone's sexual orientation. Your attempts to impose standards of multiple gender affiliation, in addition to the binary one, even in your status you are binary. We do not deal with our treatments. He has children, he had a wife, he made his own decisions later as he explained his personal life. Which EU directive talks about multiple gender affiliation? ", said Berisha.
This statement also brought reactions from Brussels. EU Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos called Berisha's statements unacceptable.
