How can Albania avoid marginalization in Europe's new geopolitical agenda?

The European Union's attention seems to be shifting to the East and Ukraine, putting the Western Balkans, including Albania, on the waiting list. The EU's new budget proposal for the period 2028-2034, which aims to massively finance strategic military projects and confront geopolitical threats from Russia and China, is opening up discussions on the future of the region.

With an ambitious plan that exceeds 2 trillion euros, the EU is boosting financial support for Ukraine by a full 100 billion euros, while the Western Balkans will receive only 14 billion euros through IPA funds. This uneven ratio of funds raises concerns about the potential marginalization of countries like Albania, which could face further delays in the integration process.

This new reality urgently requires an active and strategic diplomatic approach from Albania. Official Tirana must increase its diplomatic presence in Brussels and strengthen ties with key countries such as Germany, France and the Nordic countries, to ensure that the EU's attention does not completely shift away from our region.

If the EU follows this course, the risk of expanding Russian and Chinese influence in the region could be very real.

Faced with this challenge, Albania has the opportunity to become a key point of regional cooperation, creating alliances with other Western Balkan countries for a common position in Brussels. A coordinated regional front can increase the influence and voice of our countries in European discussions.

Furthermore, Albania should deepen and strengthen its strategic relationship with the United States of America, thus providing a counterweight to any potential marginalization by Brussels. The strategic partnership with the US is a guarantee for the stability and security of Albania and the region.

In this complex panorama, the Albanian diplomatic approach must be dynamic, far-sighted and courageous, to guarantee that our region will not remain simply a "waiting station" in Europe's new geostrategic policy./ Pamphlet
