Gaza, Donald Trump's luxurious riviera or the naked body of Palestine?

Former senior Israeli officials urge Trump to end war as demographic displacement plan becomes political weapon of modern colonialism...

In one of the most provocative statements of his return to the international political scene, Donald Trump, the former president of the United States, announced a plan to “transform” the Gaza Strip into a luxury tourist center, a “Middle Eastern Riviera,” as he called it. The idea, floated in early February 2025 and accompanied by a propaganda video created by artificial intelligence, presents a Gaza without Palestinians, with palm trees, casinos, swimming pools and giant statues of Trump himself and his Israeli ally, Benjamin Netanyahu. But behind this golden facade lies a dangerous idea: the ethnic cleansing of an entire population and the transformation of an occupied land into an attraction for international elites.

Trump’s proposal involves the relocation of more than two million Palestinians from Gaza to neighboring Arab countries, so that the territory can be “rebuilt” with American funds and managed as an economic enterprise. This rhetoric, stripped of any consideration for human rights and international law, revives the colonialist dreams of the 20th century, where peoples can be treated as obstacles to the “development” of investors. The reaction in the Arab world has been immediate and harsh: Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates have categorically rejected the plan, warning that any attempt at mass displacement of Palestinians will be considered aggression and a flagrant violation of regional sovereignty.

International human rights organizations, including Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, have raised the alarm that such a plan amounts to pure ethnic cleansing and defies every norm of the Geneva Conventions. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres himself has called Trump’s statement “morally appalling and politically destabilizing.” But Trump, as always, has defended the idea as a “pragmatic vision,” saying that Gaza is no longer functional as a state entity and that transforming it into an economic hub is “the only realistic future.”

Meanwhile, in Gaza, the response from the population has been scornful and defiant. “We will rebuild our own hotels,” one resident told Reuters. “He can dream of Trump City, but this land is not for sale.” These voices from the ground clash with the cynical narrative that tries to sell genocide as development, destruction as reconstruction, and extinction as tourism.

Although Donald Trump has sold the story of a luxurious Gaza, stripped of its Palestinian inhabitants, as a global destination with American protagonism, an unusual resistance is emerging within Israel.

Hundreds of former Israeli officials oppose war

Today, over 600 former senior security service officials, including former directors of the Shin Bet and Mossad, have openly addressed Trump, urging him to use his influence to force Benjamin Netanyahu's government to end the war in Gaza and broker a ceasefire. (Jerusalem Post). In their letter they state:

“In our profession we believe that Hamas no longer poses a strategic threat.” The war has fulfilled its military objectives and we must now focus on the release of hostages and diplomatic policies of peace (The Indian Express).

This internal pressure constitutes an open challenge to the unconditional narrative of war. The layer of military officials and intelligence agents are reviving a strong opposition to the government and supporting demands for a consensual plan.

In this context, Trump's offer for a "Middle Eastern Riviera," a project that envisions massive displacement of Palestinians and development geared toward elite tourism, is seen not simply as propaganda, but as a variant of "modern colonization" with a demographic and economic overtone that seeks to replace suffering and destruction with exclusivity and luxury.

International analysts point out that Trump's proposal constitutes a violation of international law and fuels regional conflict. At a time when thousands of aid trucks remain stranded outside Gaza and over 1,300 civilians have been killed seeking humanitarian aid, the luxurious vision is a moral affront to the real suffering of the Palestinian population.

This is complemented by concerns emanating from international institutions such as the UN and human rights organizations, which warn of a humanitarian collapse and demand an urgent response.

In such an atmosphere, the demand of former Israeli officials for an end to the war and an international role in pressure oriented towards peace pose an important diplomatic challenge for Trump and the international community: will this influence be used to help stop the conflict or will it remain just a propaganda platform? / Pamphlet
