"Over 2 billion euros"/ How construction in Albania turned into the

The head of the DP, Lulzim Basha, citing a DASH report, has stated that over 2 billion euros have been laundered in the construction industry in our country!

Through a reaction on "Facebook", he said that the Global Initiative against Transnational Organized Crime reported in 2020 that construction in Albania was a preferred way to launder money.

Basha added that in Tirana permits have been given for thousands of square meters where buildings have been built and often according to him the winning companies do not have the financial capacity for their construction.

Based on this, Basha called on SPAK to launch an investigation regarding the source of income in the construction industry, to discover the origin and who is behind them.

" Over 2 billion euros have been laundered in the construction sector in Albania according to international reports. The US Department of State in its report finds that Albania is "the main destination of money laundering". In 2020, the Global Initiative against Transnational Organized Crime (GITOC) found that construction in Albania was a preferred way to launder money.

In 2021, the arrest of dozens of 'Ndrangheta members in Italy revealed their links to the construction sector in Albania. Interceptions as part of the investigation revealed that one of the suspects stated: "In new skyscrapers, the prices are around €3800-4000 per square meter. Do you know what the real cost is? €510."

Although SPAK launched a preliminary investigation in February 2021, there is still no indication of what is happening with this investigation.

Millions of square meters of construction permits are reported to have been granted in Tirana in recent years. Most of the companies under whose name construction permits are obtained do not have the financial capacity to complete them. The companies' balance sheet showed that they have minimal income and no assets or loans that can be used to finance projects.

Where does this money come from?

Who is hiding behind them?

Who and how secures building permits on behalf of these modest companies?

Whose money is being cleaned with the constructions in Tirana? The Democratic Party, through its advisors in Tirana, has requested complete data on construction permits in the capital. The municipality of Tirana has an obligation to make transparency about the permits granted, while SPAK must undertake a deep and unhindered investigation so that Tirana is not an oasis of crime and corrupt politicians who launder money in the construction sector", writes Basha.
