For the Greek state, there is already another diplomatic challenge, the one with Germany, which is related to the support that the latter gave to Albania for EU membership.
The Greek newspaper "Kathimerini" has devoted an article to the bad relations between Prime Minister Mitsotakis and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.
"Germany's support for Albania's admission, despite the continued imprisonment of the elected president of Himara, Fredi Beleri, has led to Mitsotakis' clash with Chancellor Olaf Scholz", writes the largest Greek newspaper, which says that "after the easing of tensions Greek-Turkish, now Greece must also deal with Germany on the issue of expansion".
"Germany has taken as its main lesson from the Russian invasion of Ukraine that too much effort to accommodate Russia and others within the European Union (Hungary, for example), a hallmark of Chancellor Angela Merkel's years, was a mistake. To correct that, Berlin now seems willing to give up unanimity, at least in foreign and security policy," the newspaper writes.
The opening of a path towards Ukraine's EU membership is welcome, writes the newspaper, which emphasizes that "Germany's support for Albania's admission, despite the continued imprisonment of the elected president of Himara, Fredi Beleri, has led to the clash of Mitsotakis with Chancellor Olaf Scholz".
A few days ago, this same newspaper listed the reasons why German Chancellor Olaf Scholz fully supported the membership process despite the Greek blockade due to the Beleri case.
"Kathimerini" writes that one of the main reasons is the investment that Germany has made for the reform of the justice system in Albania.
