Former SP MP Petro Koçi, a former close associate of former Prime Minister Fatos Nano, has gone back in time to his acquaintance with the historical leader of the Socialists.
The latter was escorted to his final resting place yesterday, after losing his battle with a serious illness. Invited to the News24 lunch program, Koçi said of Nano that he was a champion of freedom.
"Our political life was very much connected to Fatos. For a while I was the organizing secretary. I would have had to work with the districts as well. It was a different time. The mentality had to be replaced. The totalitarian mentality survived after 92 until 97 from a formal point of view. Monism fell in 97. It could not fall in 92, since it survived until 97.
"There was class warfare, again wild and massive. Nano was a champion. Not only for the way the SP functioned and its members made political decisions, but he also imposed freedom in the party's relations with the state," he said.
When asked if someone abused the freedom that Nano gave when he was in power, Koçi said that "the final judgment on whether a person was a socialist or not is whether he was a good or bad man. Political freedoms limit abuse more than when they are absent. In that case, there is a concentration of power. People's fear of speaking turns into fear of corruption. He enjoyed the debate for those who thought differently. Meanwhile, there were those who wanted to dig a hole in him. There were people there who abused the power that he was given. Even though they did not deserve it. The Meta group was given undeserved power. Meta himself was given the position of the leader of the SP in Tirana, even without a vote. He gave him power."
