The US Embassy urges people to avoid the protest area and warns of increased security measures, roadblocks, and traffic restrictions.
The United States Embassy in Tirana has issued a warning to American citizens regarding the opposition protest expected to take place on Friday, May 8, in the capital.
The announcement comes even though the leader of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha, has publicly stated that the protest will be peaceful.
The statement released by the US embassy emphasizes that mass gatherings, even when they begin peacefully, can escalate unexpectedly.
" Although protests and large gatherings often begin peacefully, the situation can change quickly ," the embassy's response said.
According to the announcement, the protest is scheduled to start at 7:00 PM on "Dëshmorët e Kombit" Boulevard, in the segment between "Skënderbej" Square and "Mother Teresa" Square, near the Prime Minister's Office building.
The embassy warns that the rally may spread to other surrounding areas, while Albanian authorities are expected to impose increased police measures and traffic restrictions on several road axes.
It is also reported that US embassy staff have been instructed to avoid the area where the protest will be held.
In its advisory to US citizens, the embassy recommends that they avoid areas where protests are taking place, follow local media for updates on the situation, and exercise increased caution when moving around in public.
The US warning comes at a time of political tension between the opposition and the majority, while the Democratic Party has announced a major mobilization in Tirana.
Berisha has stated in recent public appearances that the protest will be civil and without incidents, but the US embassy's reaction shows concern about the possibility of the situation worsening during the rally.
