Vangjel Tavo of SP will be the new mayor of Himara, after holding yesterday's temporary elections for this municipality.
Tavo, who was previously the prefect of the Vlorë district, ran against the candidate of "Bashke Fitomje", Petro Gjikurija, under the logo of the SP, and thus reaped the victory.
Tavo managed to win the race with a margin of 1477 votes more than his rival in the race.
According to the official data of the Central Election Commission, the turnout in yesterday's elections in Himara was 37.69%, where out of 23,074 voters on the list, 8,678 people participated in the voting. A participation of almost 800 voters more than in the local elections of May 14, 2023 where 7655 voters voted.
The mayoral elections in Himara Municipality put an end to the saga of a 15-month journey of the municipality without a legitimate mayor at its head. The saga started two days before the May 14, 2023 elections with the arrest of Beler. Then the sentence of Fredi Beleri to two years in prison for the charge of active corruption in the elections, and the arrest of the acting chairman Jorgo Goro under the suspicion that, through forged documents, he allowed the irregular registration of two real estates.
The partial elections in Himara were also held in a cold climate between Tirana and official Athens that arose after the arrest and conviction of the former elected mayor of Himara, Fredi Beleri.
But who is your Gospel?
It was the year 1996 when Vangjel Tavo started his engagement in politics under the banner of the Socialist Party. He followed the accession to this political force until 2010, where he then left, after debates within the party with the chief socialist Edi Rama. He then joined the Socialist Movement for Integration, headed by Ilir Meta.
We recall that for a period of 1 year, in 2012-2013, Tavo served as Minister of Health, replacing Petrit Vasili.
In the parliamentary elections of 2013 and 2017, Tavo was elected deputy in the district of Gjirokastër.
He continued to run in this district in the elections of April 25, 2021, but he could not win the deputy's mandate and then withdrew from active politics. Meanwhile, this year he was proposed and appointed by the Rama government as prefect of the district of Vlora, a position he held shortly before the elections for mayor of Himara.
