The fight against corruption is the rhetoric articulated by all political parties in our country, during the electoral campaign, and not only.
With the establishment of SPAK, with the support of internationals, the goal was clear, to hit the untouchables and bring them to justice whenever it is proven that they have violated the law.
The ISP has recently published a list of 13 names of politicians and high officials who have been investigated for corruption or abuse of office.
First on the list is former Prime Minister Fatos Nano, who in 1993 was sentenced to 12 years in prison for abuse of office and corruption. But after 5 years, in 1998, Nano was acquitted.
Ilir Meta, one of the politicians who has been on the scene for 3 decades, in 2011 was accused of two criminal offenses, that of corruption and abuse of office. But the case for Meta at that time went all the way to the Supreme Court, which overturned the decision and declared him innocent.
But two former ministers are also investigated. Lulzim Basha and Fatmir Mediu were accused in 2007 and 2008 of the same criminal acts, abuse of office and corruption. For both of them, the case was suspended, after the deadline passed. For the same reason, the sentence was suspended for Nikollaq Neranxi in 2009, who was accused of corruption and tax evasion.
Tom Doshi, who has been declared non grata by the US, was charged with perjury in 2015, but the case against him was dropped by the prosecution.
In 2015, MP Mark Frroku was also investigated for 6 years in prison, who was accused of concealing wealth and illegal construction.
Former Interior Minister Saimir Tahiri was investigated and convicted by the court.
Recently, one of the hottest issues, that of incinerators, has put several high officials in front of responsibility. For this, former deputy Alqi Blako and former minister Lefter Koka are under investigation.
