Former Prime Minister Sali Berisha has stated that he could not protest against the immigration agreement between Prime Minister Edi Rama and his Italian counterpart, Georgia Meloni, giving reasons why.
During the press conference, Berisha revealed a conversation with the Italian Deputy Prime Minister, Antonio Tajani.
"I am saying that it is a statement that originates from the deepest depths of consciousness. I cannot accept in my country a wave of anti-immigrants and xenophobia. I belong to a political force of the center-right and the protests go to extremes. Third, I do not agree because absolutely, the act is against the Constitution, the European convention of human rights.
I say a few hours after I spoke in front of you, the Deputy Prime Minister of Italy, Antonio Tajani, whom I have known for 30 years, called me on the phone. He tells me we saw that statement and it was harsh. I told him dear friend, for these reasons that I also told you, there cannot and cannot be protests that promote xenophobia. It cannot even organize protests against Italy, but I think that Italy as a person who has been President and Prime Minister, Italy has given invaluable help to this country. It has given billions, but it has also been a kind of university. In my concept, there is no protest against free places. I can never compare a free country with Serbia," said Berisha.
