Strong debates were held today in the Committee on Europe and Foreign Affairs, where among the agenda items was the discussion on the gender equality law.
The opposition strongly opposed this proposal by the majority, calling on Speaker Igli Hasani and the Socialist members to withdraw because the proposed law destroys the basis of the traditional family.
DP MP Tritan Shehu asked the Socialists to withdraw while it was still too late, as otherwise they would create chaos, stagnation and lead the country into a dead end. He proposed that if the majority wants to pass this law, it should be put to a referendum.
"The law against discrimination and gender equality should not be passed. How can you bring this law here. I know it well, it is based on concepts of biological sex, this is the issue and this is where we must stay. Biology is determined, X or Y, so I ask you for one thing, back off with this, because you are putting the country in a dead end, you are causing stagnation among the people. You understand the stagnation you are creating, so back off before it is too late. This is an attack on human values. Most European countries do not have this law, give up these directives. If you want this law to be approved, pass it through a referendum, you have the votes, but this law must pass through a referendum", said Shehu.
The head of the SP parliamentary group, MP Taulant Balla, opposed his opposition colleague, saying that he was misinforming and that the purpose of the law was not gender reassignment or what was claimed with sexual orientation, but equality between men and women in all areas of society.
