After the second round of talks in Istanbul between Ukrainian and Russian delegations, the Kremlin rejected the proposal for a 30-day ceasefire, offering only partial, symbolic pauses in limited areas. The rejection of the ceasefire comes at a time when the humanitarian crisis and casualties on both sides of the front are deepening significantly.
Faced with this situation, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky threw a new diplomatic card on the table: a face-to-face meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, with two strong figures on the international stage as interlocutors; Donald Trump and Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
Trump immediately reacted by expressing his willingness to help. But no official confirmation or refusal came from the Kremlin. A cold silence, indicating either strategic calculation or silent refusal.
These developments took place against the backdrop of a powerful air strike by Ukraine, which hit Russian air bases, destroying a number of strategic aircraft. A military action that sent a signal that Kiev is not willing to wait indefinitely for diplomacy, especially when the conditions offered by Russia are considered capitulating: recognition of the annexations, a ban on NATO integration, and recognition of the Russian language as an official language.
Meanwhile, Ukraine published a list of 400 children abducted by Russia and is demanding their return. Moscow has agreed to discuss only 10.
Will Trump step in for peace? That remains the question circulating in Western diplomatic circles. If his role as an interloper is accepted, it would be the first time that Washington and Ankara have collaborated to establish a new framework for talks, at a time when the war risks turning into a frozen conflict with no solution.
