Rama, Meloni and Sunak meet tomorrow in Rome, focusing on illegal immigration

Prime Minister Rama and his two counterparts, UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Italy's Giorgia Meloni will meet this weekend in Rome to discuss how to deal with illegal immigrants.

Both Meloni and Sunak have reached agreements with Albania in an effort to address illegal immigration. According to Britain's agreement, signed a year ago, Albanians who arrive in Great Britain on dinghies across the Channel can immediately return. Almost a third of all those arriving in the UK by dinghy in 2022 were Albanians.

Sunak has credited the deal with helping to reduce the number of boat arrivals by a third this year, although almost 30,000 people have still traveled to Britain.

Meanwhile, last month, Meloni and Rama announced an agreement for the construction of two reception and shelter centers for immigrants in Albanian territory. According to the agreement, asylum seekers rescued by the Italian coast guard in the Mediterranean will be housed while their asylum cases are being processed. The agreement was criticized by opposition parties in both countries, while on Wednesday, the Constitutional Court of Albania temporarily blocked the ratification of the agreement by the parliament until it examines the opposition's request.
