US resolution, IDU raises alarm over state capture in Albania

The centerpiece of the resolution is the strong warning that Albania risks sinking into a "narco-authoritarian regime."

At the annual forum of the International Democratic Union (IDU), held this week in Washington DC, Albania received the darkest political spotlight in recent years. The IDU Executive Committee, which includes forces such as the US Republican Party and Germany's CDU, unanimously adopted an alarming resolution about the situation in our country. The document clearly denounces Albania's democratic slide, the capture of justice, the selective persecution of the opposition and the government's ties to criminal networks.

The IDU speaks of a degradation of the electoral system in Albania, where vote buying, intimidation of citizens and misuse of public institutions have become the norm. More than 4,500 state activities have been used for electoral purposes, without any accountability. In areas such as Elbasan, Durrës and Vora, criminal networks have directly influenced the selection of candidates and the political outcome itself, undoing any sense of fair competition.

The resolution also focuses harshly on the judiciary, which is said to be paralyzed and controlled by the executive. Constitutional Court decisions are ignored, the prosecution acts selectively, while independent media and controlling institutions are under constant pressure. A special section is dedicated to the criminal prosecution of key opposition figures, who, according to the IDU, are being politically punished for their stances against the government.

The centerpiece of the resolution is the strong warning that Albania risks sinking into a “narco-authoritarian regime,” where power, crime, and propaganda coexist as one. Albania is considered a base for regional drug trafficking and money laundering, which poses a serious threat to European security and the EU enlargement process.

Finally, the IDU calls on the European Union, the United States and the Council of Europe to set clear conditions for Albania's integration, to create an independent mechanism for monitoring elections and to impose targeted sanctions on corrupt officials and those linked to crime. At the same time, the IDU expressed its full support for the Albanian opposition and citizens who, under conditions of pressure and fear, continue to defend freedom, pluralism and European values. / Pamphlet
