Fee increase for medical students who want to go abroad, Vokshi: Discriminatory

The Member of Parliament for Reestablishment, Albana Vokshi, has commented on the law that forces medical students to work for 5 years in Albania.

In a statement to the media, she said that the government inflated the annual cost of Medicine as a way to convince students to pledge their diploma for 5 years of work in their homeland.

Vokshi has stated that in 2019 the University of Medicine has calculated the cost of studying in the General Medicine program with the value of ALL 236,468/year, while in the report prepared in the Parliament of Albania in relation to the law that limits Medical students from withdrawing their diploma it is said that "According to the information provided by the University of Medicine, Tirana, the cost of study for the integrated study program in "General Medicine" is 678,994 ALL/year".

She said the government has tripled the cost of studying using the University of Medicine. According to her, the University Board did not fall prey to the pressures and estimated the annual cost much less.

The MP also indicated that the law is unconstitutional and that they will appeal it to the Constitutional Court.

"How did he do this, using the University of Medicine for costs many times higher than the real ones, trying to put the students in front of the citizens, as he always does.

An unconstitutional, discriminatory, ineffective, unjust law was passed in haste, in the middle of the night, refusing to listen to the voice of the students.

A law, through which Edi Rama intends to cover the failure of the sensational promise of free health care, the failure of health policies, the failure of concessions that have destroyed every pillar of health.

A law that damages public universities and directs students to private ones.

We will ask the Minister of Education and Health for the implementation of the law. PD will also appeal the law to the Constitutional Court",  it says in its statement.

We remind you that in the last plenary session, the Assembly approved with 71 votes in favor, 23 against and no abstentions the bill for medical students.

According to the law, medical student applicants entering the system this year are obliged to sign an agreement based on which they must work in Albanian hospitals for a period of 5 years after graduation. While those who continue their studies from the second to the sixth year, have the opportunity to sign the agreement that obliges them to work for 2 or 3 years in Albania. Otherwise, they will pay the full tuition fee.
