Democratic Party MP Jorida Tabaku, in her capacity as a member of the Committee on Economy, Finance and Employment, raised a number of concerns during the hearing with the Governor of the Bank of Albania, emphasizing the decline of the euro and the increase in prices.
"I am glad that SEPA became a reality on October 1st and we hope that the Prime Minister has learned it too, since he told people that it started on January 1st," said MP Tabaku ironically at the beginning of her speech, underlining that the opposition has had accurate debates over the years on the direction of the Albanian economy.
Tabaku emphasized that the Albanian economy is facing a weak and unstable structure, where 60% of economic growth comes from construction, while real sectors such as industry and agriculture are in decline.
"This is also reflected in employment and productivity data. The unemployment you report is nominal, because employment is shifting towards non-productive sectors," she stated.
One of the main concerns raised by Tabaku was related to inflation and the cost of living, where according to her, official figures do not match the reality of citizens.
"How is it possible that the depreciation of the euro and the reduction in prices in international markets have not been reflected in the products of the consumer basket? The 2.2% inflation is not felt in the pockets of Albanians who today spend 40% of their income on food," said the Democratic MP.
She also highlighted that Albania is not reaching its economic potential, remaining dependent on tourism and remittances, a model that "is not sustainable in the long term. Instead of relying on productive sectors, the economy is kept alive by money coming from abroad," she said, urging the government to change course in its policies.
At the end of her speech, Tabaku recalled that she had filed several legal proposals for consumer protection in the microfinance sector, which were rejected by the majority, and requested that the Assembly return those initiatives for review.
"It is time for Parliament to assume its controlling role and not allow the Albanian economy to turn into an experimental laboratory where minorities connected to power benefit, while the majority of citizens face rising prices, low wages and the inability to lead a normal life every day," concluded MP Tabaku.
