The Chairman of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha, has reacted regarding the visit of the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, to Tirana, part of her tour of the Western Balkan countries.
Berisha described this visit as important and expressed gratitude for the European Union's continued support for Albania.
In a press conference, Berisha listed some of the country's 'black spots', such as mass exodus.
"In fact, today is a day with many events, but we are starting from our home.
Today, with a visit to Tirana, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, begins her tour of the countries of the region.
On this occasion, on behalf of the DP, I wish her a warm welcome to Albania and success in her tour.
I would also like to take this opportunity to express my deepest gratitude to European taxpayers, the European Commission and EU governments for the extraordinary generous assistance they have provided to Albania and Albanians over the years and decades.
I would also like to thank Albania for its membership in SEPA, an act that represents a great relief for Albanian citizens and all those microtransactions they have with their relatives in Europe and around the world.
But, this is also an occasion to publicly declare that the DP, the political force that has made Albania a member of the Council of Europe, of NATO, and that has signed the SAA, visa liberalization and that deserved the EC recommendation to open negotiations, but which was maliciously obstructed by Edi Rama, strongly supports and will support without reservation the full integration of Albania into the EU as the most excellent future for Albania and the Albanians.
But the DP emphasizes that only an integration process based on merit, the functioning of the rule of law, free elections and a free market economy is in the best interest of the Albanians.
In this context, we emphasize that for the DP, Albania currently, apart from the geostrategic and foreign policy criteria, does not meet any other criteria for its integration into the EU.
If we refer to the Albanian people, I would add here that in these years, Albanians have fled their country more than in any time of war, natural disasters or other causes.
"During Edi Rama's government, 1 million and 99 thousand citizens of this country left Albania for the European space alone," he said.
