Today, the parliamentary group of the Socialist Party met to consider the establishment of two special committees: one for Electoral Reform and another for Territorial Administrative Reform. The election of the People's Advocate was also discussed.
In a statement to the media, the head of the SP parliamentary group, Taulant Balla, presented the proposed structure for these committees, where according to him, the majority of members will belong to the Socialist Party.
"For the electoral reform commission, we have suggested a first variant with 17 members. Nine from the Socialist Party and eight from other parliamentary groups. We are open to a discussion with the opposition, regarding past references. We are ready to preserve this tradition, but it is important that the Special Commission be established.
I have requested that a draft be prepared as soon as possible on the financing of political parties, one of the tasks that the European Commission has left us.
"As for the territorial reform commission, according to previous practice, the largest parliamentary group takes the lead with a chairman and a deputy chairman," Balla said.
"We will elect the ombudsman, with or without the opposition!"
Balla also commented on the announcement of the vacancy for the Ombudsman, emphasizing the need for an inclusive process free from political influences. He expressed the desire for this position to be filled within the year, through an agreement with the opposition. But he added that the election of the Ombudsman will take place, with or without the opposition.
"The efforts of the parliamentary majority, now at the 3/5 threshold, are to give Albania an ombudsman, also in the Albania 2023 vision, to give the ombudsman someone who professionally fulfills the provisions of the constitution for the lawyer and is not a member of a political party, but a representative of civil society with contributions in the social field. I call on everyone who meets the criteria to apply. This time, they no longer have the right to hold the ombudsman elections hostage. Let's build a process together. We are here in this situation 3 years late for the ombudsman elections due to the lack of desire to be part of this process. They no longer have the right to hold the ombudsman hostage because if the opposition does not become part of it, we are forced to elect the ombudsman. I hope that he will be elected by Christmas. We will give Albania an ombudsman with the hope that we will give it a personality in the field of human rights", said Balla.
The head of the SP parliamentary group concluded his speech by emphasizing that the draft law on gender equality is nearing finalization, with some improvements in terminology expected to be submitted within the coming days.
