Binaj, known for his strange imitations of Socialist Prime Minister Edi Rama and his appearances on television, was strongly supported by Sali Berisha.
A day earlier, the Democratic Party gave support to comedian Florian Binaj to run for Mayor of Tirana in the elections to be held on November 9. Binaj, once part of 'Albania Becomes' led by Adritik Lapaj, distanced himself from this subject, while he was present in some of the movements undertaken by civil society, organizing protests.
Binaj is currently supported by almost all opposition parties, with the exception of Agron Shehaj's 'Mundësia' and Arlind Qori's 'Lëvizja Bashkë'. The latter will run for mayor on November 9, thus repeating his attempt in 2023, when he ran for mayor of Tirana against Erion Veliaj and Belind Këlliçi, at that time.
Florian Binaj's selection as a candidate for Tirana seems to have attracted the attention of international media. Politico in an article compares the comedian to Zelensky, the Ukrainian President.
" Call Zelensky Albanian."
Famous satirist Florjan Binaj has announced his candidacy for mayor of Tirana, supported by the leader of the opposition Democratic Party, Sali Berisha.
The snap elections will be held on November 9 in the Albanian capital, after former mayor Erion Veliaj was removed from his position due to imprisonment on suspicion of corruption and abuse of office, which he denies. The winner of the race will hold the position for two years until the next local elections across the country , ”writes Politico.
It is further noted that Binaj, known for his strange impersonations of Socialist Prime Minister Edi Rama and his television appearances, announced his intention to run for the post on Saturday.
"I have decided to announce my candidacy for Mayor of Tirana... I believe that my contribution will serve, even if only for half a term, for hope and unity, to improve the lives of all residents of the capital ," he wrote in a Facebook post.
The announcement was quickly backed by Berisha, who himself faces legal troubles. He announced on Monday that all voters and opposition parties should support the comedian's candidacy, with his center-right Democratic Party leading the call.
Berisha told Politico that “ Florjan Binaj is a courageous social activist, a courageous advocate for citizens’ causes, especially against corruption both on and off the television screen, and an extraordinary communicator. He embodies exactly what the Albanian opposition has been looking for: not only a way to expand its reach, but also a response to the growing demand for clean, youthful, and urban public profiles .”
Binaj's candidacy has drawn comparisons to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who was a successful actor and comedian before entering politics. But not everyone is convinced that Binaj has what it takes to run the capital's 250 million euro annual budget, with local commentators criticizing his lack of administrative experience.
"We are talking about the administration of a city here, not about a cabaret show," analyst and former Democratic Party politician Edvin Kulluri said on local television on Monday.
Binaj will face the ruling Socialist Party candidate and former education minister, Ogerta Manastirliu.
The Socialist Party, which has just begun its fourth term in the national government, currently holds 54 of the country's 61 municipalities.
Binaj did not respond to Politico's request for comment.
