Voice of America: Bypassing Rama, a clear sign of the strong rift between Tirana

In Albania, Prime Minister Edi Rama said today that 'it is very dangerous that relations between Albania and Greece are hostage to internal tribal politics'.

Through a post on the X social network, Mr. Rama reacted after the dinner organized last night in Athens by the Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Micotaqis, with the leaders of the countries of the Balkan region, to mark the 20th anniversary of the EU-Western Balkans meeting in Thessaloniki, which was aimed at to accelerate the efforts of the countries of the region for membership in the European Union.

Instead of Mr. Rama, President Bajram Begaj was invited, who refused the invitation 'due to the agenda defined earlier'.

The bypassing of the Albanian Prime Minister was a clear sign of the strong rift between Tirana and Athens over the issue of the elected mayor of the Municipality of Himara, Fredi Beleri, representative of the Greek minority, arrested two days before the local elections on May 14, under suspicion of buying and selling of votes.

Beleri is in custody and has dismissed the charges as politically motivated, while Athina has repeatedly called for his release.

Again 'prison arrest' for the elected mayor of the municipality of Himara, Fredi Beleri

Last week in Himara, the Greek minority organization 'Omonia' organized a protest, which was attended by the mayors of the two largest Greek cities, Athens and Thessaloniki, and the neighboring municipalities of Igoumenitsa and Corfu.

In his post, Mr. Rama openly stated that the dinner was 'used to send Albania a contradictory message against the much more ambitious goal of the initiative'. He further added that he understands the pressure from third parties, eager to use every opportunity to make a mountain out of a pile of dirt.

But according to him, 'what should unite us in such turbulent times for the sake of our people, our countries, our region, our Europe is greater than what divides us', wrote Rama./VOA
