Commissioner for Neighborhood and Enlargement Negotiations, Marta Kos, in her speech from the "EU Enlargement" panel at the Munich Security Conference, stated that only the EU can bring candidate countries into the Union, not the US.
Commissioner Kos said that in terms of deadlines, we expect the process for Albania and Montenegro to be closed by 2026 or 2027.
"Enlargement today is not only influenced by what the US does but also by geopolitics. When Slovenia joined the EU, it was easy, but later it became difficult as member states have to go deeper. Today we have a specific situation. We have external forces that intervene and divide. It is becoming a problem for the unification of Europe and that is why this is so important."
The EU was created to maintain peace, security and prosperity, this is the strength of the EU. Enlargement is the greatest guarantee of security.
There is a trend from northern Europe, countries with a high level of rule of law that are considering returning.
As for the deadlines, we expect that by 2026 or 2027 the process for Albania and Montenegro will be closed.
"The EU can bring candidate countries into the EU, not the US," she said.
