The West only wants to maintain peace, said the Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, to the prestigious American newspaper "The Washington Post", speaking about the week-long crisis in the northern part of the country that came as a result of the forceful installation of three to the new Albanian mayors in the three northern municipalities inhabited by Serbian majority. For Kurti, as he tells WP, there is no question of "bowing" to international demands for the removal of the police from municipal buildings "until the (violent) protesters are dispersed or arrested".
"When you're dealing with far-right, ultra-nationalists and very dangerous authoritarian regimes, statements meant to keep the peace just continue to embolden authoritarian figures."
Kurti told the American newspaper that the United States of America is an "irreplaceable ally, friend and partner" of Kosovo, but that "now is also the time to speak our democratic truth to the authoritarians in power".
"If these violent mobs are out in Serbia or in prison (in Kosovo), then we can reduce (the number of police)," he said, suggesting that the number of police could be reduced to "single digits".
"We are eternally grateful and grateful for their role in our liberation and independence, for security and protection," said the Prime Minister.
