The EU has shown readiness to provide legal and technical support for the holding of elections in the four municipalities in the north of the country. The official for the EU's foreign and security policy, Zoi Muletier, has stated for RTV21 that early elections in the north should be held as soon as possible.
" The EU notes the decision of the Minister of Local Government Administration to establish a working group on local petitions for withdrawal. The EU is waiting to receive more information from the authorities about the next concrete steps that would lead to the holding of these elections. In its statement of June 3, the EU requested that early local elections in the north of Kosovo be held without delay. The EU is ready to provide legal and technical support for any process that would lead to the holding of early local elections through petitions for withdrawal in the north of Kosovo, said Muletier .
This position of the EU came after the Government started the legal procedures for the removal of the presidents elected in the north of the country, paving the way for the announcement of new elections in the 4 northern municipalities. The Ministry of Local Government Administration has appointed the working group for the drafting of the Administrative Instruction for setting the procedures for the citizens' initiative for the removal of the mayors of the municipalities. According to the decision signed by the minister, Elbert Krasniqi, this group must finalize the draft administrative instruction by September 1, 2023.
The document also states that the working group will be supported by the EU office, representatives from embassies and the OSCE. This movement comes as another step in the implementation of the agreement reached between the government of Kosovo and the European Union for reducing tensions in the north and returning to the dialogue process with Serbia.
