The dinner in Athens reveals the request of the president of the European
Ursula von der Leyen and Albin Kurti

The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, spoke on Monday at dinner with the Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, about the need to reduce tensions in the north of Kosovo and the implementation of agreements with neighboring Serbia.

The meeting took place in Athens at an informal dinner, organized by the Greek Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the EU-Western Balkans Summit.

The President of the European Commission wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter, that with Prime Minister Kurti, "he also spoke about the need to re-engage in the dialogue mediated by the EU. It is vital to overcome obstacles in the region and bring the Western Balkans together closer to the EU". For his part, Prime Minister Kurti wrote in X that "in the meeting with the head of the EC, he emphasized the importance of the full, unconditional implementation of the Basic Agreement." "It was a pleasure to meet the president of the European Commission in Athens. We talked about bilateral relations, regional cooperation and the EU's growth plan for the WB6 (Investment Forum of Western Balkan Chambers), as well as dialogue".

"Kosovo has implemented its commitments"

Later in a press release from the Prime Minister's office, it is said that Kurti "recalled the meeting in Bratislava on July 10 for de-escalation and emphasized that for about two months there have been no incidents or violent protests in the four municipalities in the north of Kosovo , while we also have an increased number of workers in municipal buildings. Kosovo has implemented its commitments and it is important for the EU to remove the measures," the communiqué states.

The European Union, but also the USA, are constantly asking Kosovo and Serbia to reduce tensions in the north and for Pristina to organize the new local elections in the four municipalities inhabited by a majority of Serbs, Zveçan, Leposaviq, Zubin Potok and North Mitrovica.

It is possible to petition for the removal of mayors of municipalities

"As a minister and as a minister I have covered my responsibility starting with the administrative instruction, which foresees the right of citizens to collect signatures for the removal of mayors from office", said Minister Krasniqi. According to him, early elections can be held if 20 percent of voters in a municipality sign a petition for the removal of the mayor of that municipality. Tensions in the north of Kosovo culminated on May 26, when the new Albanian mayors of the municipalities in the north, escorted by the police, entered the municipal buildings. The Serbs local that earlier boycotted the elections, opposed this by repeatedly holding protests in front of municipal buildings./DW
