The spokesperson of the US Department of State, Vedant Patel, said on Tuesday evening that the Kosovo-Serbia discussions on the Serbian dinar must continue urgently.
He made these comments at a press conference on the day the parties met in Brussels to discuss the dinar issue and the implementation of the agreement to normalize relations between them.
"These are talks that we welcome and they are taking place within the dialogue mediated by the European Union in Brussels today, and include a discussion of the new regulations of the Central Bank of Kosovo on the use of currencies. These discussions must continue urgently," said Mr. Patel.
He reiterated concerns raised by the United States over a Kosovo Central Bank regulation banning the use of the dinar for cash payments, which prompted an angry reaction from Belgrade, and Western concerns about its impact on the lives of Kosovo Serbs. , who continue to be financially supported by Serbia.
Mr. Patel said that the dialogue facilitated by the EU is the right channel for solving issues related to the normalization of relations between Kosovo and Serbia.
Last week, the United States sent the diplomat Gabriel Escobar to the region, in an effort to renew the process of normalizing relations between Kosovo and Serbia based on an agreement reached last year in Brussels and Ohrid and to find a solution about the use of the Serbian dinar in Kosovo.
Next week, the dinar issue is expected to be discussed at a meeting of the parties in Brussels. /VOA
