The President of the European Commission, Ursula von Der Leyen, during today's media conference, where she presented the progress report on EU enlargement, was asked by journalists about the integration of Kosovo.
She said that the implementation of the draft statute of the association of municipalities with a Serbian majority would be a step forward in the interest of Kosovo.
"I think it is important for Kosovo that this country has the main goal of EU membership. We are clear about what we expect from Kosovo. We discussed the implementation of the association agreement. If we look at Kosovo and Serbia, it is important for us to give each country the opportunity to move, but not to tie them together too much.
While the European Commissioner for Neighborhood and Enlargement, Oliver Varhelyi emphasized that successful dialogue with Serbia is key for Kosovo's European path.
"Yes, there is an application for membership from Kosovo. It is in council and has not yet been asked by the committee for an opinion on this. We are ready to give an opinion, it is not my job to decide the position of the council and the countries. Our position for Kosovo is that the European path will come through a successful dialogue, they should try twice to make the dialogue successful", he said.
