Kurti obeys the EU, the withdrawal of the police from the north of Kosovo begins

Today, the Kosovo Police will reduce the presence of officers around municipal buildings in the north of Kosovo, as part of efforts to de-escalate the situation.

In cooperation with KFOR and EULEX, it was decided to reduce the effectives by 25%, as it was estimated that the situation in the north of Kosovo is calmer.

This decision by the government comes after Albin Kurti announced on July 11 that he has agreed to support the holding of new elections in the four municipalities with a Serbian majority in order to reduce tensions with Serbia. The agreement was reached on July 10 in Bratislava in a meeting between Kosovo's chief negotiator, Besnik Bislimi, and the European envoy for Kosovo-Serbia talks, Miroslav Lajçak.

The first and second steps concern the reduction of police in and around municipal buildings.

In addition to July 12, when the reduction of the first 25 percent began, today will also begin the removal of the other 25 percent of police officers in and around municipal buildings.

"The Kosovo Police in the wake of the realism of its constitutional and legal duties and authorizations in the interest of public safety in the country, as well as with the aim of implementing the agreements reached in Bratislava on July 10, 2023, between the European Union and the Republic of Kosovo, precisely the second step of this agreement, on this occasion a working meeting was held between the Kosovo Police, EULEX and KFOR to assess the security situation in and around the municipal buildings of the northern municipalities. According to the joint assessment, by the Kosovo Police, EULEX and KFOR, the security situation in and around the facilities of the northern municipalities is estimated to be good. In the sense of this common finding, from tomorrow the reduction of the members of the Kosovo Police by 25% will begin, in and around the municipal facilities in the north", the Police announced.

The police have said that the Kosovo Police teams, together with EULEX and KFOR, will continue the coordination and will undertake the necessary actions according to the regular assessment of the security situation in and around the municipal facilities, in the northern municipalities.

After the Police announcement, the Minister of Internal Affairs, Xelal Sveçla, reacted in the evening.

Announcing the further reduction of the Police, he said that Kosovo is respecting the Bratislava agreement.

"Kosovo is implementing the commitments from the Bratislava agreement and is continuing to contribute positively to de-escalation", he said.

The post of Svechla was shared on Twitter by the Deputy Prime Minister Besnik Bislimi.

The situation in the North became tense after the new mayors who won the April 23 elections entered the municipal buildings. Lulzim Hetemi has been inside the facility of the Leposaviq municipality since May 29, while the same has been reported for Erden Atiq. Meanwhile, on the other hand, the two PDK leaders, Izmir Zeqiri in Zubin Potok and Ilir Peci in Zveçan, have continued their work from alternative facilities.
