On suspicion of espionage, the Police arrested Fatmir Sheholli on Thursday, who in the early 1990s was a member of the Serbian State Security.
Radio Television of Kosovo has released an audio recording in which Fatmir Sheholli, the analyst who was arrested the day before on suspicion of espionage with Serbia, is involved. In the audio, he talks to two people, to whom he tells about his connections with the Serbian List and with Milan Radoićić, who is wanted by Kosovo. "I am first and foremost a great friend with them, otherwise we work actively. My position is very...for the public opinion strange. I have great support in Serbia. I have extremely great support from the Serbian List, in everything..That's why I say that it is quite strange in the public opinion, but on the other hand...it means that I have to...my great friend is Milan Radoićić. My great friend, also their friend. Take what is happening, what we are talking about with a grain of salt," says Sheholli during the conversation.
A day earlier, the Kosovo Special Prosecution Office announced that after several months of investigation, they had arrested Sheholli on suspicion of the criminal offense of "Espionage." Also, yesterday, Kosovo police conducted searches at his apartment.
After the war, he maintained ties with Serbian politicians in Kosovo, and was active at the Institute for the Advancement of Interethnic Relations.
"The suspect F.SH. was arrested in the Pristina region, under the well-founded suspicion of having committed the criminal offense of 'Espionage', under Article 124, paragraph 3 of the Criminal Code of Kosovo. The arrest operation was also carried out with the assistance of the Kosovo Intelligence Agency," the Prosecution's announcement states.
Following his arrest, his apartment in the capital was also raided. Investigators from the relevant units were seen leaving the building where Sheholli resides, from which they also seized materials, which are suspected to be related to the investigation into the criminal offense of "Espionage".
Acting Minister of Internal Affairs, Xhelal Sveçla, said that the case will be treated with "high institutional seriousness" and stressed that "the time of Serbia's spies in Kosovo is over."
"We remain committed to defending our country from all circles that do not hesitate to jeopardize it for any of their own gains. The time of Serbia's spies in Kosovo is over. Anyone who works for Serbia and against Kosovo will be pursued without compromise and unstoppable. The Republic must be defended with the highest institutional and moral responsibility," said Sveçla.
In addition to suspicions of espionage, a KIA document shows that he is also involved in budget misuse.
In March of this year, KOHA reported that the KIA inspector submitted a report to the Special Prosecution Office last year, in which it was found that without following internal procedures, there was an increase in the budget for informants, while the expenditure of around 2 million euros was made without identifying the recipients, or even in cases where they were known, there was no data on the information received in exchange.
During the years 2017-2020, among those who benefited from this fund is Fatmir Sheholli, who, according to the report, received 639 thousand euros from the KIA.
Sheholli has frequently appeared on a number of television debates in the role of political analyst.
In public appearances, he has said that after the war he was engaged in the Kosovo Intelligence Service (SHIK), but has also admitted that he worked as an inspector for the UDB in the 1990s.
And, an article in the newspaper "Bujku", published on March 15, 1991, shows that 44 Sheholli families from Podujevo and the surrounding area publicly distanced themselves from Fatmir Sheholli and his father, who were accused of collaborating with the Serbian government of the time.
"Because our distancing from Maliq Sheholli and his son Fatmir, made in 1990, published in the religious magazine 'Dituria Islame', is less well known to the public, we find it necessary to inform the Albanian-speaking public, everywhere in the world, that the extended Sheholli family (44 heads of household) always distances itself from the actions of these two: Maliq and Fatmir," the text published in the newspaper states.
The article also emphasized that Maliqi and Fatmir "have been put at the service of the Serbian occupier and thus have committed the worst human act: national treason."
"Regardless of their renegade actions, our all-people's movement will achieve national liberation. The stain of betrayal can never be removed from the renegades," the letter, which was sent to the editorial staff of "Bujku", read at the end.
Last year, Bedri Shabani and Muharrem Qerimi were also arrested for espionage.
