Kosovo police announced that they seized several thousand euros and dinars from a safe in a Serbian bank branch in North Mitrovica on Wednesday.
In a media release, police said the safe in question had been searched on May 20, during the crackdown when Kosovo authorities closed six facilities of the Post Savings Bank and the People's Bank of Serbia, but its officials had failed to open it at the time. "in the absence of the responsible person who had the keys".
The police said that on Wednesday they identified the responsible manager of the "Narodna Banka" bank branch on "Knjaz Millosh" street in North Mitrovica and that they interrogated her "as a suspect".
" In this case, the following monetary assets were seized: 152,290 Serbian dinars, 4,580 euros and 940 Swiss francs ," the announcement states.
During the May 20 operation, police said they confiscated a total of more than 2.2 million euros - including dinars, francs and US and Australian dollars.
The action of the Kosovar authorities was condemned by the United States and the European Union, which said it escalates tensions in the area inhabited by a majority of Serbs.
That action was carried out a week after the Central Bank of Kosovo announced that the transitional period for its regulation, which prohibits the use of the Serbian dinar for making payments, had ended.
The CBK regulation, which entered into force on February 1, foresees the euro as the only currency for making payments.
Kosovo and Serbia have met seven times in recent months in Brussels, within the dialogue mediated by the EU, to find a solution for the sending of financial aid from Serbia to the Serbs of Kosovo, but they have not found agreement so far.
The regulation has increased friction between Kosovo and its Western partners, who requested its suspension until the Serbian community - which for years accepts various payments in dinars from Serbia - adapts to the new practice./ REL
