The British politician of the Conservative Party and the chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs in the House of Representatives, Alicia Kearns, expressed concern about the unfair approach of the West to the recent Kosovo-Serbia crisis.
In an exclusive interview in "Inside Albania", Kearns clearly stated which side caused the tensions observed in recent weeks.
" My concern is related to the balance of how, especially the US and the EU, are reacting to the increased tensions in Kosovo. The truth is that, if we return to what has led to this crisis, it is precisely Serbia's decision to intervene in the internal elections in Kosovo ," she emphasized.
Tensions in northern Kosovo escalated at the end of May, after the new Albanian mayors entered municipal buildings with the help of the Kosovo Police, despite opposition from local Serbs.
Since then, Serbs have been protesting in front of municipal buildings in Zveçan, Zubin Potok and Leposaviq.
These mayors were elected in local elections on April 23 in the four northern municipalities, a process that was boycotted by the Serbs.
On June 14, tensions escalated further after the arrest of three Kosovo Police officials. Serbia claims that they were arrested "deep" in its territory, but Kosovo stated that they were patrolling in the territory of Kosovo near the border with Serbia in Leposavic.
While the West seeks to reduce tensions, internationals are not ready to criticize Serbia for the illegal arrest of three Kosovo Police officers, according to MP Kearns.
" What we have seen is the denigration and punishment of our democratic partner, Kosovo, while an increasingly autocratic country, Serbia, has been greeted with enthusiasm and there have been no consequences, despite the fact that they have arrested or kidnapped three Kosovo Police officials. The lack of will of countries and organizations like the EU to call it an illegal arrest, to recognize that a kidnapping has happened or to punish Serbia, is inexcusable," she said.
After the tensions, the European Union and the United States have presented three demands to the Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti: the calming of the situation in the north of Kosovo, the holding of new elections in the four municipalities in the north and the return to dialogue for the normalization of relations.
The US has also encouraged Kurti that the newly elected Albanian presidents in the north carry out their duties from alternative locations.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Kurti has presented a five-point plan, which also includes holding elections. However, Kurti has stated that in order to have free elections in the north, the rule of law is necessary.
Kearns, a vocal supporter of Kosovo in the House of Representatives in Great Britain, criticized the West for not being able to stop Serbia from exacerbating tensions through unbalanced policies, while Kosovo always aligns itself with the foreign policies of the international community. .
" Fundamentally, this is a failure of preventive diplomacy, and what we have seen over these last decades is a continued failure to stand up to those who support autocracy and who do not engage meaningfully in international processes. Kosovo is our democratic partner, which agrees to be involved in sanctions and fully supports what the international community and the EU require when it comes to Ukraine. On the other hand, we have [Serbian President Aleksandar] Vučić saying that he has broken his hand and will have it for four years, so he cannot sign an agreement to clearly help calm the situation. We have Vučić who signed an agreement on foreign policy with Russia, many months after the illegal occupation of Ukraine ," she emphasized.
