Vetëvendosje Movement MP, Dimal Basha, has been elected Speaker of the Kosovo Assembly.

After almost 6 months of political deadlock, Kosovo MPs today elected Dimal Basha as Speaker of the Parliament by a majority vote.

Dimal Basha, from the Vetevendosje Movement, received 73 votes in favor, while 30 MPs voted against. It was the second time that Basha's name was proposed for speaker of parliament and one of the fifth names proposed by the Vetevendosje Movement.

Some of the deputies from PDK, AAKA and some of the minorities also voted in favor of him, while LDK and Serbian List voted against. The session was adjourned for an hour, and it is expected that the names of the five vice-presidents will be voted on afterwards.

In his first speech after taking office, Basha expressed his gratitude for the trust given, emphasizing the responsibility that this position brings and the importance of national unity for protecting the country's sovereignty.

He praised the sacrifice of past generations and the fundamental role of women in building a democratic society. In a message of unity, Basha emphasized that Kosovo has proven to be a democratic country even in the most difficult challenges.

"Thank you for your trust. I feel the great responsibility that has been entrusted to me. Our Republic is built on countless sacrifices, on the blood, the toil that believed that the future of the country was greater than life itself. A great thanks goes to the women and mothers, who remain a sound foundation for the country. Humility and gratitude to all the women and girls who contributed to a strong and democratic society.

Today, this republic stands independently alongside friendly countries. We are grateful for your contribution. For several months, the Assembly has been faced with a problem that has not been encountered before, but which is also present in friendly countries. Everything has happened within the contours of a democratic country. This is once again proof that Kosovo is a democratic country. In the most difficult cases, this people has proven that they can put aside differences and stand up for common causes. We must be united in our goals, the protection of the sovereignty of our country for a free and independent Kosovo",  said Dimal Basha.

The election of Basha as Speaker paves the way for the constitution of the Assembly and the formation of the new Government, after a long political stalemate following the February 9 elections.
