Kosovo yesterday took a historic step towards joining the most important European institution, the Council of Europe.

Kosovo managed to get maximum support from the deputies of the Parliamentary Assembly. The Parliamentary Assembly has voted in favor with a majority of votes for Kosovo to advance even further towards membership in the Council of Europe. 171 deputies voted for Kosovo, while 29 were against, 11 abstained.

Previously, the Assembly rejected in order the amendments proposed by Serbia.

Earlier in the day, the Committee for Political Affairs and Democracy in the Council of Europe rejected several other amendments that were proposed by the Serbian delegation and some Italian and Hungarian MPs to make the establishment of the Association of Serb-majority municipalities a condition for the membership of Kosovo in CoE.

While yesterday, the Committee for Legal Affairs and Human Rights in the Council of Europe voted unanimously in favor of Kosovo's application for membership.

Kosovo took a step towards membership in the Council of Europe on March 27. Despite the vote against Serbia and two other countries, the Committee for Politics and Democracy of the Council of Europe approved the report of the rapporteur for Kosovo, Dora Bakoyannis, which recommends that the country has met the conditions to become a full member of the Council of Europe.

Now, the final word on Kosovo's membership must be given by the Council of Ministers of the Council of Europe in May.

This historical support for Kosovo has incited the media in Belgrade in favor of the government of Aleksandër Vucic, who write that the Greeks betrayed them while the Spanish kept theirs.

Four deputies from Hungary, two from Cyprus were against, and out of five deputies from Greece, only one vote was against, B92 writes.

A deputy from Germany, two deputies from France and one from Italy also voted against. Against were seven members of the Serbian delegation, as well as Maja Vukičević from Montenegro, as well as Snježana Novaković and Branislav Borenović from Bosnia and Herzegovina. 

Among the 11 abstainers was a deputy from Montenegro, six Italians and three Moldovans, as well as one German, it was announced on the PSSE website.

After the approval of the report of the former Greek minister, Dora Bakoyanis, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe will send a recommendation for acceptance to the Committee of Ministers of Foreign Affairs, which takes the final decision with a two-thirds majority of the ministers or the ambassadors who represent them. and who are present at the time of voting.
