Shakira's lawyer has blamed Gerard Pique for her tax problems. According to him, the laws are not fair for everyone in Spain. Adding more fuel to the fire, the singer's legal defender declared that if Shakira had fallen in love with Sergio Ramos, she would have saved 120 million euros.
Pau Molins said her 11-year romance with the former Barcelona footballer led to her facing six charges of tax fraud instead of three.
"The residents of Madrid, where Ramos played for Real, do not pay property tax, unlike those who live in Catalonia, where Shakira lived with Pique. If she had fallen in love with Sergio Ramos instead of Gerard Pique, it would have cost her a lot less. "It turns out that if you're a resident of Catalonia, you can go to jail for a crime that you can't be jailed for in Madrid, even if you're doing the same thing because there's no property tax," he said.
Pau also insisted he wanted to go to trial, but Shakira had decided to make a deal.
Shakira pleaded guilty to six counts of tax fraud in a court in Barcelona and agreed to pay £7 million in a deal to avoid jail time. She said she accepted the charges for the sake of her sons Milan, ten, and Sasha, eight, so she could continue with her career.
