Xabi Alonso will be the new Chelsea manager. According to reports, the London club and the Spanish coach have reached an agreement in principle for a 4-year contract, following discussions on the sporting project and transfer strategy for the upcoming season.
The parties are currently working to finalize some structural and administrative details before the agreement is made public. However, the mutual will to finalize the operation as soon as possible is considered very strong.
Chelsea were left without a manager in April after the sacking of Liam Rosenior, who had only been in charge for 106 days as Enzo Maresca's successor. Since his departure, Xabi Alonso has been the club's main target.
From Leverkusen's success to Real Madrid's difficult experience
The 44-year-old is considered one of the most promising coaches of the new generation. Alonso won high praise during his adventure at Bayer Leverkusen, where he managed to transform the German team, leading them to win the championship and the German cup, without suffering a single defeat in the Bundesliga during the 2023-2024 season. He also led Leverkusen to the Europa League final.
After his success in Germany, Alonso took over as Real Madrid manager, but his time at the Santiago Bernabeu did not go as planned. The Spanish coach left the club after less than eight months in charge.
Despite the fact that Chelsea will not participate in European competitions next season, this has not influenced Alonso's decision to accept the London club's project.
Names like Andoni Iraola and Oliver Glasner were also mentioned in the race for the Chelsea bench, but Xabi Alonso's quick and positive response seems to have finally closed the issue of the new coach of the London "Blues" for next season.
