Diego Armando Maradona could have survived if he had received proper medical treatment in time, his former doctor said during the retrial that is underway to clarify the circumstances of the death of the world football icon.
According to Dr. Mario Shiter, the use of a basic diuretic could have significantly improved Maradona's health within 48 hours. His statement has raised new questions about the medical care that the former footballer received in the last days of his life, international media, including "The Sun", report.
Maradona died in 2020, at the age of 60, of a heart attack. The death came just weeks after he had undergone brain surgery to remove a blood clot.
During the court hearings in San Isidro, near Buenos Aires, numerous testimonies were presented about the former Argentina captain's serious health condition. Doctor Carlos Cassinelli told the jury that Maradona had "water everywhere", referring to the accumulation of fluids in his body.
Cardiologist Oscar Franco also gave evidence critical of the treatment management. He said he had recommended more detailed examinations to rule out serious problems with the coronary arteries, but according to him, Maradona's chief physician, Leopoldo Luke, had refused to carry them out.
Currently, seven healthcare professionals are facing charges of negligence in their treatment of Maradona, while another will be tried in a separate trial. All of the accused have denied responsibility.
The retrial has been reopened after a procedural problem related to the making of an unauthorized documentary during the first trial. In total, around 100 people are expected to testify.
Investigations continue, while the evidence so far is shedding light on the medical treatment received by one of the greatest figures in the history of world football.
