England defender Kyle Walker has decided to end his career with the national team. The decision was made public about three months before the World Cup, a competition in which he was expected to have little playing time.
The right-back was no longer in coach Thomas Tuchel's plans and the chances of him being called up to the national team were considered minimal. In these circumstances, the 35-year-old footballer decided to close his chapter with the "Three Lions".
Currently playing for Burnley in the Premier League, Walker leaves the national team with 96 caps. His last match for England was in March last year, in a 2-0 win over Albania.
In a statement to the public, Walker stressed that representing England has been the greatest honour of his career.
" Playing for England has always been the greatest honour of my career. Every time I pull on the shirt, it has had a special meaning for me and my family. After much reflection, I feel this is the right time to step down and make way for a new generation of players ," he said.
The defender added that he leaves proud of his journey with the national team and grateful to the coaches, teammates and fans who have supported him over the years.
" Representing your country is the greatest thing you can do in football and the memories with England will stay with me forever ," Walker concluded.
