Awaiting the decision of the institutions, Manchester City is shaking even outside the courts. Citizens have been frightened by the statements of a hacker who created the global issue of "Football Leaks" with his discoveries.
The English club is currently under investigation for alleged financial irregularities: 115 charges have been brought against the "Citizens" with a trial now imminent and which according to the English media could be brought forward to the autumn of 2024, compared to the previous one in the summer of the year 2025.
Under investigation is the economic management of the club for a period of more than 9 years: from 2009 to 2018, when the investigation began.
But who has been talking about Manchester City again? This is Rui Pinto, the hacker who created the website "Football Leaks", through which he regularly published information about transfer fees and contracts signed by footballers, even world famous ones.
Details about the income from the sponsorship of Manchester City and the contract of the former coach Roberto Mancini had previously appeared there.
The champions of England continue to deny all accusations and have even gone on the counterattack, but now the situation can get complicated.
In fact, the hacker claimed to have provided authorities in Germany and France with "millions" of incriminating documents which, he says, will show "criminal conduct" and that "Citizens" have deliberately violated Financial Fair Play rules.
On September 11, 2023, Rui Pinto was sentenced to four years with a suspended sentence (avoidance of prison) by the Court of Portugal.
He was found guilty of unauthorized access to computer systems in five different countries, one case of attempted extortion against the sports investment fund Doyen and three cases of interception of correspondence to access emails.
Thanks to him, details about the contracts of Neymar to Barcelona and Gareth Bale to Real Madrid were revealed. But he made headlines above all for uncovering PSG and Manchester City's alleged tax avoidance schemes.
He defended himself from the various charges brought against him by claiming that he acted as an "informer". The Portuguese court later recognized this status and convicted him only of the crimes of extortion.
The hacker later cooperated with law enforcement to solve various investigations and is still in the witness protection program.
