The Iranian Football Federation says it is in negotiations with FIFA to move Iran's World Cup matches to Mexico for security reasons.
Mehdi Taj, the President of the Iranian Football Federation, said in a post on X that "when Trump has explicitly stated that he cannot guarantee the safety of the Iranian national team, we will certainly not travel to America."
"We are currently negotiating with FIFA to hold Iran's World Cup matches in Mexico," he added.
Last week, Iran's sports minister said it was not possible for Iranian players to participate in the tournament after the US launched airstrikes alongside Israel against Iran.
US President Donald Trump has said that Iran would be "welcome to the World Cup" but that he does not believe it would be "appropriate for them to be there, for their lives and their safety."
The Iranian team is scheduled to play two group stage matches in Los Angeles and one in Seattle.
