Former Chelsea defender Michael Dubery has revealed one of the most difficult moments of his career, revealing he played in the European Cup Winners' Cup final without being able to move half of his face after being diagnosed with Bell's Palsy just weeks before the match.
Duberri, now 50, shared this experience on the SACKED! podcast, describing it as one of the biggest challenges and achievements of his early career as a professional footballer.
" I was 21 years old and in the prime of my life. Just before the final I was diagnosed with Bell's Palsy, which is basically like a mini-ischemia on one side of the face. I couldn't move half of my face and I felt terrified ," he said.
However, the England defender managed to convince then-Chelsea manager Gianluca Vialli that he was fit to play. He started in the final against Stuttgart, which ended in a 1-0 victory for the London side in Stockholm.
Duberri emphasized that his main motivation was not to be seen as the team's weakest point, despite facing players with great international experience.
" Every time I see pictures of the post-match celebrations, I ask people what they see. They say 'glory' and 'victory'. And I say: 'Resilience'. Because my face at that moment shows all the fight and determination it took to overcome Bell's Palsy ," he added.
