It was supposed to be a friendly to test the level of preparation of the two national teams in view of the South American competition, which starts next Friday in Santa Cuz de la Sierra, Bolivia, but instead turned into a fierce battle.
The frightening physical clash involved not only the players of Argentina and Ecuador U-15, but also other people, who entered the field in the created chaos. The match was played in Ecuador, in Guayaquil, at the "Emelec" stadium, where the home team won 1-0, but the result is really the last thing that will be remembered. The two teams engaged in an embarrassing brawl, with punches, kicks and even a flag being waved as a weapon.
It all started with a fight during the match, where the players of the two teams pushed each other. One of the Ecuadorian players hit his Argentinian colleague in the face, receiving a red card from the referee. But the story did not end there, because more brutal violence broke out after the final whistle. The playing field turned into a "gladiator arena", where everyone was against everyone. There were hand-to-hand fights, with the involvement of the relevant technical staff.
At one point, footage shows a player from the Ecuador bench grabbing the corner flag and running towards the opposition, brandishing it like a weapon. Truly horrific scenes, which we hope we never see again in football.
