Former Spanish Football Federation president Luis Rubiales was pelted with eggs during a book promotion in Madrid on Thursday, an attack he said was carried out by his uncle.
Rubiales, 48, was presenting his new book "Matar a Rubiales", The Murder of Rubiales, at the Espacio Eventize media hall in Madrid when a man in the audience started throwing eggs.
"It was my uncle, his name is Luis Ruben, who is a troublemaker and always has been. An uncle who is my age. He threw eggs at me because he is a crazy person and I don't think there is any justification for that. They have arrested him and we will have to take action against him because I honestly thought he was armed," Rubiales said.
Meanwhile, police said a Spanish man had been arrested, but declined to confirm the family connection.
In February, Spain's Supreme Court found Rubiales guilty of sexual assault for kissing striker Jenni Hermoso without her consent during celebrations of Spain's victory in the 2023 Women's World Cup in Sydney.
He was fined more than 10,000 euros and given a three-year ban by world soccer's governing body, FIFA. The incident sparked nationwide outrage over sexism in Spanish society and women's football, sparking the "Me Too" movement in the country.
Spain's criminal code stipulates that a kiss without consent can be considered sexual assault, a legal category that includes all types of sexual violence.
