The gym of the Gravelines basketball club in Northern France was gutted on Christmas Day by a huge fire, AFP reported.
" There is no more basketball hall, everything became smoke and ashes", said the president of the Gravelines club, Kristian Devos. Forty years of life, the sports palace 'Sportica' disappeared in smoke ", he added.
The entire sports complex, which includes the swimming pool, cafeteria and surrounding buildings, was gutted and more than 60 firefighters were mobilized to put out the blaze that destroyed the 3,000-seater hall.
" If we had been in a period with high attendance in the pool or if there had been training in the basketball hall, it would have been catastrophic ", underlined Kristian Devos.
" But everything was closed, under maintenance. "There was no practice going on for the basketball team when the fire started ," he added.
Penultimate in the French top flight, Gravelines were due to host second-placed Paris on Thursday, but the game will not take place. In 2004, Gravelines was a finalist in the French league, and a year later won the cup.
The Northern France team is part of the Professional League, i.e. the elite of basketball in the country, and participates in the European Cup, where it also played against the Kosovo team, Trepça.
