The future of Arsenal coach Mikel Arteta could be seriously questioned at the end of the season if the team fails to secure one of the two major trophies: the Premier League or the Champions League. English media report that the leaders of the London club are closely following the situation and are expected to make an important decision after the end of the season, if the main objectives are not achieved.
In this context, sources close to the club suggest that a potential candidate to replace Arteta has been identified. It is former Arsenal legendary midfielder and current Como coach, Cesc Fabregas. The Spaniard, highly regarded by fans for his contribution in the past, could return to London, this time in the role of coach.
Meanwhile, the team's form has raised concerns. The Gunners have lost three of their last four games, weakening their title race and leaving the Premier League wide open after a defeat to Bournemouth and Manchester City's win over Chelsea.
On the eve of the crucial Champions League clash, Arsenal will host Sporting in the second leg of their quarter-final at the Emirates Stadium. The Londoners come with a slim advantage after Kai Havertz's last-minute goal in the first leg, which keeps them in contention for qualification.
However, the situation in the Arsenal camp remains difficult due to numerous absences. Ricardo Calafiori, Bukayo Saka and Jurrien Timbers did not take part in the last training session. Martin Odegaard, who played 70 minutes in the first match, is also missing.
The condition of England midfielder Declan Rice, who also missed training, remains in question. Coach Mikel Arteta was reserved in his statements at the press conference.
