
Today, 42 years since the death of former Prime Minister Mehmet Shehu, the right-hand man of the dictator in communist Albania, an accomplice in crimes, but also a victim of power, the Files Authority has declassified over 30,000 pages of documents from the archive of the former State Security. which were created for him and his family members.
His tragic death was followed by that of his son Vladimir and his wife, Fiqerete Shehu. All dark deaths, with the heavy shadow of suspicion that they were murders ordered from above, but which were presented as suicides in official documents.
The collected statements, among which the theses thrown by the power structures themselves to release as much fog as possible over the truth, a fog that has not yet been removed after four decades of mystery over the tragic death of the former Prime Minister of the country, are found in recently declassified documents and are ready to be served to researchers pursuant to law no. 45/2015, amended.
"In addition to the documents of the investigative and judicial processes of the wife and children of the former Prime Minister, the documents that we are declassifying today contain information created by the First Directorate of the former Security of of the State regarding the activity of the former Prime Minister, comments about suicide, exile-deportation registers, created after the death of the Prime Minister, in January 1982 and closed in 1990. There are 18 volumes of documents for the former Prime Minister, while for his wife 5 volumes.
For communist historiography, Mehmet Shehu, the Prime Minister of Albania for more than 3 decades loyal to the party, turned overnight into the agent of several foreign agencies. 42 years have passed since this event. Much has been written about him, former leaders of the Secret Police structures of the time have begun to speak with certainty about his murder, and yet the mystery continues.
The declassification of these documents, 30 years after the fall of communism, is a historical necessity that helps historians and the public better understand the dark past. The authority encourages researchers to familiarize themselves with these documents and compare them with evidence and documents from other archives, inside and outside the country", AIDSSH announces.
