Debate on Chinese missiles, Bushati: Vučić is playing with fear in the Balkans
Ditmir Bushati

Former Foreign Minister Ditmir Bushati has reacted to the recent statements of Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić, who confirmed the purchase of Chinese hypersonic missiles for Serbia's fighter jets, as a response to the military alliance between Albania, Kosovo and Croatia.

In a reaction on social media, Bushati emphasizes that the Serbian president has returned to what he calls "the old game with two scores", where one message is addressed to European countries and another is used for internal political consumption.

According to Bushati, this approach has contributed to maintaining the status quo in the Western Balkans and has hindered the real progress of the region.

He recalls that Vučić's statements come just a few days after the Serbian president and the Albanian prime minister published a joint article in the German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, which discussed the possibility of a "second-tier" membership in the European Union.

"Just a few days after the President of Serbia and the Prime Minister of Albania published a joint article in the German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung about accepting a 'second-tier' membership in the EU, the Serbian president has returned to his favorite game: warning about false narratives and alleged threats of war from the alliance between Albania, Kosovo and Croatia," Bushati said.

He adds that the Western Balkans needs more rule of law, cooperation and economic development, not fear-based rhetoric.

In his response, Bushati also appeals to Albanian politics not to leave regional priorities on the back burner. According to him, political energies are being spent on debates that are not directly related to the country's strategic interests.

"While Albanian politics wastes energy with resolutions to declare Iran a state that promotes terrorism, even though Albania has a proper law that provides for the necessary instruments that can be implemented in such cases, it is imperative that our priorities in the region are not left to inertia," Bushati emphasizes.

We recall that Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić confirmed on March 12 that Serbia has purchased CM-400 supersonic ballistic missiles from China.
