A police operation coordinated by the Anti-Mafia District Directorate of the Bologna Public Prosecutor's Office has led to the dismantling of a powerful Italian-Albanian drug cartel, leading to the arrest of 15 people.
Of these, 12 have been sent to prison, while 3 others are under house arrest. This operation has involved several Italian provinces, including Reggio Emilia, where 5 people have been arrested and accused of being part of an Italian-Albanian criminal organization dedicated to international drug trafficking.
Investigations conducted by Italian authorities have revealed that this cartel has imported and distributed large quantities of drugs, including 23 kg of cocaine, 6 kg of heroin, 80 kg of hashish and 240 kg of marijuana, coming from Albania, Kosovo, Ecuador, Colombia and the Netherlands. As of 2020, the total value of drugs distributed in Italy is estimated at around 8 million euros, where it has also been confirmed that counterfeit banknotes of €75,000.00, €500.00 have been introduced into the national territory from Spain.
The operation was supported by technical investigations, including encrypted telephone and electronic interceptions through the use of the Sky-ECC application.
Investigations have revealed that this group was closely linked to other criminal groups, including the 'Ndrangheta and organized crime in Lazio.
The organization had a well-structured network, based in Emilia Romagna, but also branching out into Calabria, Lazio and Veneto, encompassing an extensive drug distribution network throughout the national and international territory.
The group's illegal activities were carried out with meticulous managerial methods, using shell companies to launder illegal profits.
Obtaining electronic conversations that drug traffickers had exchanged via encrypted smartphones and using the Sky-Ecc application were essential in uncovering the cartel.
Thanks to an activity carried out by French, Dutch and Belgian police forces on the encrypted platform, millions of messages exchanged by drug traffickers in various countries of the European Union have been found.
Investigators highlighted the "high social risk" of the suspects, also due to family ties with exponents of the Calabrian 'ndrina' attributed to the Grande Aracri family, with roots in the Emilian territory for years.
