Requesting release from prison, the Supreme Court will review Veliaj's appeal today

The High Court will today review the appeal of Tirana Mayor Erion Veliaj, who is seeking his release from prison. Judge Albana Boksi has been appointed rapporteur for the hearing.

Veliaj has been in custody since February 10, 2025, when he was arrested by order of the GJKKO following a request from SPAK. He is charged with 5 criminal offenses: corruption, money laundering, concealment of assets, abuse of office, and bringing prohibited items into the cell.

Veliaj is accused of passive corruption in 9 cases, in relation to several companies. According to SPAK, he received irregular benefits in cash and real estate, while the companies received building permits or public funds from the municipality.

Veliaj was dismissed from the post of mayor of Tirana on September 25, by decision of the Council of Ministers with the argument that he had not reported to duty for more than three months, since his arrest on February 10. However, Veliaj filed an appeal with the Constitutional Court, a request which suspends his dismissal.
